VISTA members working with RSVP are engaged in helping build RSVP for the future through public awareness, media coverage, seeking financial and in-kind contributions and focusing on specific areas of social concern such as homeland security, poverty, mentoring children, youth development projects and more.

You will acquire new skills or further challenge abilities you already have developed. You will also enjoy the satisfaction of making a real difference, helping a community help itself.

AmeriCorps*VISTA members do not provide direct service; they don't directly tutor children or build homes.  Instead they help to create and expand community-based programs, services and systems that help individuals in their local communities improve their lives for the long term.  They assist RSVP in a wide range of activities which include:

  • Recruiting new volunteers through public awareness and speaking engagements
  • Coordinating special projects such as:
    • ChIPs (Children of Incarcerated Parents), a mentoring program

    • Kids on the Block, an educational puppet show
    • Public safety, such as Community Patrol and Apartment Watch, among many others.
  • Creating outreach materials such as newsletters, brochures and press releases
  • Developing relationships with community leaders, media and neighborhood organizations
  • Soliciting in-kind contributions through fundraising and grant writing

VISTA members totally immerse themselves in their communities and projects.  They live and work with the poor to help them develop their own solutions to poverty.  They engage in no outside employment or in any education not directly related to their assignment.

  AmeriCorps*VISTA’s mission is:
to strengthen and supplement efforts to eliminate and alleviate poverty... in the United States by encouraging and enabling persons from all walks of life, all geographic areas, and all age groups, including low-income individuals...to perform meaningful and constructive volunteer service in agencies, institutions, and situations where the application of human talent and dedication may assist in the solution of poverty and poverty-related problems...to generate the commitment of private sector resources, to encourage volunteer service at the local level, and to strengthen local agencies and organizations to carry out the purpose (of the program)” (42 U.S.C. § 4951).
